Mario Lemieux is a retired professional ice hockey centre who played 17 years with the NHL between 1984 and 2005. Mario, like Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby, skated on a backyard rink or to be precise on a frontyard rink!
Mario Lemieux is also known as Super Mario and Mario The Magnificent and Le Magnifique, which literally means "the best" in French.
Mario was born on October 5, 1965 in Montreal, Quebec to a modest family. Mario Lemieux's dad, Jean-Guy Lemieux, was a construction worker and his mom Pierrette Lemieux was a housewife. Mario grew up with two brothers.
Mario's dad made home ice hockey rink on the frontyard of their home. The Lemieux brothers would play together on the rink as youngsters. As a youngster, Mario looked up to his older brother.
The path of Mario to superstar status began humbly from playing hockey at 3 years of age in the basement of his family home and by practicing on his frontyard on the home rink his dad had created for his family.
Mario went on to break numerous NHL records which still stand today. He is one of my favorite professional hockey players of all time.
